The Best Haunted Houses & Haunted Attractions in Salem, MA

Published August 3, 2026 · Updated August 3, 2026

The Old Burying Point, Salem's historic cemetery, at dusk

Salem doesn’t just do Halloween history — it does genuine, pay-your-money-and-scream haunted attractions. Some are full-on haunted houses built to terrify; others are horror museums, live-actor reenactments, and spooky escape rooms. Here are the ones worth your night, what to expect, and how to book before they sell out.

Most of these run hardest in October and sell out on weekends — but many are open year-round, so you can get scared any month with far smaller crowds.

The haunted houses (go for the real scares)

If you want the classic walk-through-and-get-chased experience, start here.

  • Chambers of Terror — Salem’s big multi-room haunted-house attraction, packed with sets, effects, and live actors. This is the one to book if you want to be genuinely scared.
  • Frankenstein’s Castle — a monster-movie-themed haunt on Derby Street, right in the thick of the downtown Halloween action.
  • Haunt Blackcraft — a darker, design-forward haunt experience for fans of the genre.

These are intense and best for older kids, teens, and adults. Buy tickets online ahead of time — the walk-up line on an October weekend is brutal.

Horror museums & monster galleries

Less jump-scare, more atmospheric dread — great for all ages and daytime visits.

History that’s actually scary

Salem’s darkest stories are real, and a few attractions bring them to life with live actors and recreated sets.

  • Witch Dungeon Museum — a live reenactment of a 1692 witch-trial examination, followed by a walk through a recreated dungeon. History with genuine chills.
  • Witch History Museum — scene-by-scene tableaux telling the story of the Salem witch hysteria.

For the full history-first angle, pair these with our guide to the Salem Witch Trials sites to visit.

Something different: haunted escape rooms

  • Stained Hourglass Escapes — themed escape rooms with a spooky Salem twist. A great small-group activity when you want to do something rather than just walk through a haunt.

Prefer your scares outdoors? Add a ghost tour

Haunted attractions and ghost tours are the perfect one-two punch for a Salem night. After a haunted house, take a lantern-lit walk through the city’s real haunted history — see our picks in the best night ghost tours in Salem, or browse them all in the ghost tours directory.

How to plan (so you don’t get shut out)

  1. Book online, in advance. October weekends and the whole final week sell out. Timed-entry tickets are your friend.
  2. Stack them by neighborhood. Several of these sit right in the downtown / Derby Street core, so you can do two or three in an evening.
  3. Come on a weekday if you can. Same scares, a fraction of the wait.
  4. Mind the age limits. The true haunted houses are intense; the museums and reenactments are the family-friendly picks.
