Salem in October 2026
October 2026 in Salem, MA is the country's biggest month-long Halloween festival. Haunted Happenings runs the full month — costume parades, ghost tours, witch history walks, the Salem Witch Trials Memorial, haunted attractions, indie horror at Cinema Salem, and live music at every venue. Halloween night 2025 alone drew nearly 100,000 visitors.
Below: every Halloween-coded event we know about, plus year-round witch history, ghost tours, and haunted attractions you can visit any month.
The signature dates: the Grand Parade kicks it all off Thursday, Oct 1, the Haunted Happenings Marketplace runs every weekend from Sep 26, and the Howl-o-ween Pet Parade takes over Derby Wharf Saturday, Oct 10. Planning which scares to book? See the haunted attractions guide and the complete parade guide.
When
All of October
Programming begins late September and runs through early November. Peak crowds: Oct 24–31.
Book ahead
Hotels & tours sell out
October weekends book months in advance. Haunted attractions, ticketed events, and dinner reservations go fast.
Year-round
Ghost tours run daily
Most ghost tours, witch history sites, and haunted museums run every month — not just in October.
Planning a Salem Halloween visit?
October weekends in Salem book up months ahead — hotels, dinner reservations, and ticketed haunted attractions all sell out. The directory has every venue in town with hours, addresses, and links to their booking pages.
Planning an October trip to Salem
October is Salem at its most crowded — close to a million visitors across the month. Three things save the day: take the MBTA Commuter Rail from Boston's North Station (about 30 minutes) instead of driving, come on a weekday or in the first two weeks of October to dodge the worst crowds, and book ghost tours, haunted houses, and hotels well in advance — the late-October weekends sell out months ahead.

Salem in October — frequently asked questions
What is there to do in Salem, MA in October 2026? +
October in Salem is Haunted Happenings — the country's biggest month-long Halloween festival: costume parades, ghost and haunted walking tours, witch history walks, the Salem Witch Trials Memorial, haunted attractions, indie horror at Cinema Salem, live music, and psychic fairs. Programming runs all month, with the biggest crowds Oct 24–31.
When is the Salem Halloween parade in 2026? +
The Haunted Happenings Grand Parade is Thursday, October 1, 2026, stepping off from Shetland Park on Congress Street at 6:30 PM and finishing at Salem Common around 8 PM. It's free to watch — arrive early for a curbside spot along Derby or Washington Street.
Is Salem worth visiting in October? +
Yes — but plan ahead. It's the most festive (and most crowded) time to visit, with events every day and the whole city decorated. Hotels, dinner reservations, and ticketed haunted attractions book up months in advance, and the last two weekends before Halloween are shoulder-to-shoulder downtown.
Do you need tickets for Salem Haunted Happenings? +
Many things are free — the parade, street performers, and browsing downtown — but haunted houses, ghost tours, museum entries, and special ticketed events charge admission and frequently sell out on October weekends. Book tours and attractions in advance.
When is the best time to visit Salem in October to avoid crowds? +
Weekdays and the first two weeks of October are far calmer than the final stretch. If you come Oct 24–31 or on any October weekend, expect heavy crowds, limited parking, and sold-out attractions — take the commuter rail or ferry from Boston instead of driving.
Are Salem ghost tours and witch history sites open year-round? +
Yes. Most ghost tours, witch history sites, and haunted museums operate every month, not just in October — so you can experience Salem's spooky side any time of year with far smaller crowds.
