Practical Magic 2 in Salem: Where to Watch It, and Where It Was Actually Filmed

Practical Magic 2 opens in the United States on September 11, 2026, twenty-eight years after the original. It is rated PG-13 and runs about 130 minutes.
If you are in Salem and want to see it, or you are planning a trip around it, there are two separate questions worth answering — and the second one trips up almost everybody.

Was Practical Magic 2 filmed in Salem?
No. And neither was the first one.
The sequel was shot in England. Production wrapped there — not in Massachusetts, and not in Salem.
The 1998 original was shot in Coupeville, Washington, a small seaside village on Whidbey Island. The Owens house that fans picture — the one with the conservatory and the wraparound porch — was purpose-built on a bluff there and taken down after filming.
Both films are set in a fictional Massachusetts town. That is the whole of the Massachusetts connection: the story lives here, the cameras never did.

What Salem actually has for Practical Magic fans
There is no Owens house to photograph. What there is, is the real version of the thing the films are stylised from — a working trade rather than a set.
- Witch and occult shops. Herb apothecaries, candle makers, tarot readers, and practitioners who sell to people who actually use what they buy. Salem has more of these than any other city in the country, and most are open year-round.
- The gardens and greenery. Ropes Mansion’s garden behind 318 Essex Street is free, open to the public, and the closest Salem comes to the Owens conservatory in spirit.
- October. If you are timing a visit around the film, you are arriving at the start of Haunted Happenings, when the whole city turns over to the season.
Practical notes
Cinema Salem is a four-screen independent theatre in the heart of downtown, a short walk from the Essex Street pedestrian mall and the commuter rail station. Parking downtown is metered and fills up on autumn weekends; the Salem Ferry and the train both drop you within walking distance.
